Democracy in Action: Empowering Community Voices
Discover our commitment to fostering active contributors in our community through the power of voting. Together, we strengthen democracy, ensuring every voice resonates. Dive into our approach to voter participation, where your voice becomes an integral part of shaping the future we all share.
How we do it:
-
Educating citizens on the importance and the steps to being civically engaged.
-
Empowering Families educates immigrant community members to prepare them for the citizenship exam, ensuring they are successful in becoming U.S. citizens.
They are then educated in becoming New American voters.
-
The Youth Civic Leadership Academy aims to build upon our youth programming and expand the leadership skills of our local youth.

New American Program
Citizenship is a powerful means of enhancing our lives and securing access to our fundamental rights. Empowering Families supports eligible legal permanent residents in the Panhandle of Nebraska with information and legal services (provided by partner organizations) to successfully become U.S citizens, vote, and get involved in issues that matter to them.
Our citizenship classes cover everything you’ll need to know to take the Citizenship test and help improve your English as well. All levels of English as well as Spanish literacy are welcome. Our classes provide students with the tools and assistance they need to successfully complete the naturalization process.
The next class will begin in February 2026.
YOUTH CIVIC LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
This program was created to build upon our Youth Arise program. Our Youth Arise program is a 6 week curriculum for high school students that introduces them to civic leadership. Before the curriculum, we ask students what their sense of belonging is. Every time we discover that the sense of belonging is low. Once the students go through the curriculum and learn how they, as youth, can be change makers, their sense of belonging increases. After the program, we learned that many students wanted more after the 6 weeks. They volunteered with us to get the vote out. But we wanted to build their leadership skills further. This is why we created the Youth Civic Leadership Academy that will consist of:
Each cohort will be 10-15 high school and college-aged youth (16-21)
Monthly Meetings
Leadership-focused activities and workshops
Meeting with local leaders and elected officials
Developing a project that will improve our community
Participants will begin to see themselves as change-makers
