Know Your Rights

Empowering Families is committed to supporting our immigrant community. The political landscape has changed, but we are dedicated to building a community of belonging regardless of immigration status. We will help families determine their options during this time of change through various resources and educational opportunities.

Resources for the Immigrant Community

  • Know Your Rights

Per the United States Constitution all people that are present in our country have certain rights, this includes individuals that have temporary immigrant statuses and undocumented individuals. The Know Your Rights Presentations will assist community members in learning what these rights are and how to exercise them. It will help them understand how to properly respond during an interaction with ICE or law enforcement to best protect them and their families. Request a Know Your Rights Presentation below.

  • Family Preparedness Planning

The best way to prepare for a deportation event is advanced planning. Our Preparedness Planning will help families determine crucial details to help family members plan their next steps and keep their households running. This may include determining emergency contacts, collecting financial information, medical records, birth records of people in the household, temporary custody orders, etc. Many of the immigrants in our communities have created full lives for themselves and own homes, businesses, and land. All these things will need to be considered in preparedness planning. Empowering Families will offer sessions with families to walk them through preparedness planning and assist in gathering all the documents needed. The printable resources link below will provide you a starting point to your family preparedness planning. To schedule a one-on-one meeting with an Empowering Families representative to guide you through this process, please use this link below.

  • Citizenship Classes

Empowering Families highly recommends that anyone in our community who is eligible for citizenship begins the application process. Empowering Families can help connect community members to immigration attorneys and legal resources. We will offer our citizenship class again starting February 27th from 6:00PM-7:30PM every Thursday. This class will help prepare participants for the naturalization exam and interview. The class is offered in English and Spanish. Space for the spring 2025 class is limited. Please register today!
